The Artist: The main protagonist of Discomfort Zone, an artist who gets discouraged and must face his fears and inner demons after being swallowed by a dark fog. He learns to embrace challenges and not let his inner darkness hold back anymore.
When the story was still in it's early roots, the protagonist was meant to be this child who awakens in a monochromatic world where he finds a magic lab with artistic tools. However as the story began to develop, the protagonist would shift from a child to a more older artist who is struggling with his craft but young enough to be versatile and acrobatic since he does quite of fighting midway through.
Lu: The deuteragonist of Discomfort Zone who acts as a guardian spirit of sorts for the Artist. She represents childlike wonder, free spirit and bravery children have with creativity as well as the light and support of close ones in times of hardship.
The concept of the boy who was originally to be the protagonist for the story would transform into a young girl who became a supportive role in guiding and helping the Artist. Her design needed to have a special texture to it, something that felt painterly, yet her outfit was something that needed a bit of time to concoct.
The Shadow: The main antagonist of the story, a dark ink monster that represents the artist's insecurities and negative emotions that takes form in the dark fog the artist finds himself in.
The shadow's design heavily depended on the design of the artist as it's meant to resemble a dark twisted version of him. Originally for the story, the shadow emerges from the artists house around the beginning and encases the artist and his home within the a dark bubble that must be broken. In the end, the bubble concept was scrapped in favor of a fog which fit the climax of the story better.
